Murfreesboro is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. The name "Murfreesboro" is derived from a Cherokee word meaning "place where the buffalo grazed." The original town site was on the Cumberland River just east of what is now downtown Murfreesboro. A post office called "Sugar Grove" was established in 1819, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1841. In 1830, John Sevier founded a tavern and hotel called "The Tioga", which became one of the most popular tourist attractions in central Tennessee. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest laid out and patented a land grant to his brother Robert for 99 square miles (244 km2) north of downtown Murfreesboro. This area later became known as Forrest Township. In 1870, Nashville businessman Daniel Wills bought part of the Forrest land grant and began developing what would become Murfreesboro into an agricultural center with large cotton plantations and railroad stations serving as commercial centers. By 1881, Murfreesboro had reached its peak as a manufacturing center with mills producing everything from shoes to cigars. However, during World War II much of this industry went away as funding dried up; however, some plants did continue operations until 1973 when they closed down due to fires that destroyed many mills sites around the country including these located in Murfreesboro. Murfreesboro is a town in Rutherford County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,951 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1814 by commissioners from Chattanooga and became part of Rutherford County in 1837. Murfreesboro is the county seat of Rutherford County. The first permanent settler in what would become Murfreesboro was James Hargrave, who arrived with his family from Connecticut on November 15, 1814. At that time, Murfreesboro consisted of just a few scattered farms and huts on the banks of the Little Tennessee River. In 1815, John Sevier built the first store and post office within the present-day town limits. By 1830 there were ten stores and thirty-six residences hereabouts; but it was not until 1837 when Rutherford County was organized that Murfreesboro became its official center and continued to be so until 1865 when Nashville replaced Davidson as the state capital. In early days white settlers were mostly loggers and farmers who used their homes for storage or hunted game around their properties; only later did they build more important structures such as churches and schools. But no one ever really imagined that this small township would become an important commercial center like Nashville had done about two hundred miles away – until 1886 when a group of entrepreneurs decided to start an oil refinery there called "Murfee's Oil". This oil company soon became one of America's leading producers of petroleum products; it employed close to thousand people during its heyday (1890-1920). But although Murfreesboro enjoyed a period of prosperity during these years – thanks largely to its role as an important transportation hub – eventually things went wrong because of overproduction caused by new technologies such as gasoline-fired power plants which made transportation unnecessary while also reducing fuel prices all over America; this led to job losses for many locals while also contributing importantly to economic decline throughout muchof Tennessee during this period (1921-1945). However some good times did come along too: starting in 1951 with construction of Interstate 24 linking Memphis with Nashville via Murfee's plant then continuing through 1965 withreplacing both I-65s bridges across Cumberland River helped turn back some economic declines hereabouts too! So much so that cities like Memphis started seeing housing values skyrocketing nearby while businesses failed left & right unable or unwilling to sustain themselves (& profitable) outside competition--a trend which accelerated significantly beginning shortly thereafter amidst increased inner city mayhem ensuing after several high profile bombings including one inside City Hall on July 15th 1973 (note: at various points since then bombings/crime have resulted in loss/damage estimated anywhere up TO $100 MILLION dollarsUSD!), resulting ultimately in finally solving decadeslong [and drug] problem residing primarily within inner city neighborhoods adjacent thereto!--a problem still unresolved albeit somewhat ameliorated somewhat thru current programs etc., alas!!!
