Murfreesboro, Tennessee is a town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 21,842 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. The name comes from the Cherokee word "murfreesboro" or "murfreesborough." The town began as a small community on the banks of the Cumberland River in 1811 and soon became an important transportation center for goods passed through the area. In 1817, Murfreesboro became known as capital of Tennessee because it was chosen to be the state's first capital. The city of Nashville eventually replaced Murfreesboro as Tennessean's main city after it gained statehood in 1837. In 1865, Confederate General John Bell Hood began his last major offensive against Union forces during the American Civil War by attacking and besieging Murfreesboro. A fierce battle ensued that left over 100 Union soldiers dead and hundreds more wounded or captured. As a result of this battle, Murfreesboro came to be known as one of history's bloodiest towns during warfare. Aftermaths such as this helped make Murfreesboro one of America's most diverse cities with many cultural opportunities for its residents. Today, Murfreesboro is home to a number of businesses and organizations associated with local heritage such as Oak Street Folk Festival and Appalachian Folklife Museum which offer events that are open to the public each year throughout September/October. Additionally, several professional sports teams have their homes in town including the Titans (football), Grizzlies (basketball) and Predators (nHL).

Murfreesboro became part of that new county and continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak in 1830 with a population of over 1,200 people. However, during the Andrew Johnson presidency (1865-1869), growth slowed dramatically as crime rates rose throughout the state. In 1870, Murfreesboro lost its status as an independent city when it merged with Nashville to form Nashville and Murfreesboro City.
