Murfreesboro is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 41,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. Murfreesboro is located on the Cumberland River and lies about halfway between Nashville and Knoxville. The first settlement in what became Murfreesboro was a small cabin near what is now Pulaski Road and Vine Street. As the area around Murfreesboro grew, people built more permanent homes along Vine Street and Pulaski Road which still run through the heart of town today. The name "Murfreesboro" derives from an early Cherokee word meaning "place where they would store their goods." In 1819, General John Sevier surveyed land for the University of Tennessee at Murffreesboro which included present-day downtown and much of what are now eastern neighborhoods on both sides of State Route 11 (later Interstate 265). In 1827, construction began on UT's first building - a log courthouse called "Old Courthouse." On October 24, 1837, Sevier ordered all Native American tribes living within 10 miles of Chattanooga to move out or be killed; this order led to many Cherokee leaving their homes in northeastern Tennessee for southwestern Alabama as well as parts of Georgia. In 1850s coal mines were developed along present-day State Route 22 west of town; these quarries continue to produce coal to this day. By 1870s most businesses had closed down due to lack of customers or competition from new industries such as steel production or textile manufacturing outside the region. However, several stores continued to operate until 1998 when they were demolished due to codes that required larger buildings with more storefronts than those currently available in downtown Murfreesboro. According to the 2000 U.S Census there were 40,565 people residing in Murfreesboro proper while another 3,817 lived in unincorporated areas including portions of east Knoxville and north Decatur counties adjoining Davidson County boundaries services for all residents are provided by Volunteer Ambulance Service District No 1 which also provides fire protection services for all citizens within its jurisdiction within City Limits

Murfreesboro is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 18,719 at the2010 census. It originally was called "Newbern" after John Newbern, who donated land to the town in 1811. The name was changed to Murfreesboro on November 3, 1907. The city is named after General Andrew Murfreesboro (1785-1850), a general during the Mexican War and dictator of Mexico City during its peak years. The first post office in Murfreesboro opened on October 21, 1892. The current Post Office building was built in 1903 and is one of downtown's most popular tourist attractions. In 1905 the first electric streetcar service began running through town; it continued until 1971. The city's first professional football team was founded as the Nashville Volunteers in 1899 and played their home games at Vanderbilt University's Carter Stadium from 1903 to 1906 under head coach Don Hutson and captain/quarterback Benny Haines. After being kicked out of Vanderbilt because of financial problems, the team moved to Murfreesboro for four seasons before returning to Nashville for two more seasons before disbanding again due to lack of players or funding. In 1916 Fletcher Cox became the first African American player ever drafted into an NFL team when he selection number 58 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in what became known as "The Great White Hope". Cox played six seasons with Philadelphia and helped them reach Super Bowl XIII where they lost 38-6 against Baltimore Colts but made history by becoming only the second black AFL franchise ever (the Buffalo Bills were based in Buffalo).
