In 1800 , Fayetteville businessman and politician Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased some 3 acres (1 ha) east of downtown Fayetteville along withrights to build a road through those lands which became known as Forrest Avenue today. In 1801 Forrest built his own cabin near where Main Street meets Glenwood Road on what are now East Side Drive and West Side Drive today; this cabin still stands today on property adjacent to Eastern State Penitentiary which was then located just northeast of downtown Fayetteville between First Avenue and Elm Street . On May 6, 1836 James Robertson donated land bounded by Second Avenue northward to Third Street eastward to Fourth street southward including all or parts of current-day Springdale Road within City limits for future use as a public square “for purposes such as market gardens or other public recreation...” This donation marked the beginning of what would become downtown Murfreesboro - an area populated primarily by farmers with a focus on growing crops such as cotton and peas until after World War II when industry began taking hold and jobs grew available in nearby municipalities such asMemphis During Reconstruction following Ulysses S Grant's general election victory over Abraham Lincoln in November 1865, Confederate Major General Jubal Early formed his commando unit "Avery" into which many Tennesseans enlisted under orders given by Price Putnam directly from President Johnson himself ordering them "to burn down all black churches", destroy books stored inside churches including bibles and religious manuscripts not claimed by owners before taxation according to lawlessness called martial law under Governor Donelson who declared martial law throughout much southern Tennessee prior to Johnson's inauguration .
