It is the second most populous city in Murfreesboro County and first in Orange County. The two counties are combined into one large county with a total population of 97,565 as of 2010. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his artillery and infantry southward from Chattanooga to attack Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant at Chickamauga Creek; Forrest's advance guard reached Murfreesboro before being driven back by Union troops under Major General Jubal Early; after this battle Forrest retreated to Chattanooga where he surrendered two weeks later unconditionally to Union forces under General Robert E. Lee. In 1865 Murfreesboro also served as headquarters for Confederate Brigadier General Stonewall Jackson during his failed attempt to cross into Kentucky from Georgia; Jackson's army halted near this town on July 16th while supplies were transferred eastward across the Cumberland River for Johnston's Army ofNorthern Virginia over which Jackson had been given control; following this debacle Jackson returned home without further actionable progress north or south of Atlanta until April 9th when he surrendered at Appomattox Court House along with all other Confederate military leaders including Generals Joseph Ewing and Alexander Stephens leading 2/5ths of Cavalry Corps commanded by Breckinridge that day New Orleans Times-Picayune correspondent Cincinnatus Hance wrote: "Jackson had been completely routed everywhere save in Chattanooga where he still held some menace" This failure aside Murfreesborne quickly regained its lost status within both Rebel armies such as having a regimental hospital established there shortly after Vicksburg Campaign (1865) having 3 cotton gin plants built there in 1866 & 1870s[1] becoming one of biggest textile centers west of Appalachia rapidly redeveloping into Downtown today just off I-24
