Murfreesboro is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 103,859 at the 2010 census. Murfreesboro is the third-largest city in Tennessee and the largest municipality within the metropolitan area of Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro. It is also one of three cities that make up the Nashville metropolitan area. The first people to settle in what is now Murfreesboro were Cherokee Indians who constructed trading posts on Holston Creek between 1793 and 1802. A fur trader, Jasper Cockerill, named it "Morganton" after his home town of Morganton, England. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Chattanooga to Murfreesboro to attack Native American forces besieging Fort Donelson near present day Nashville. After four days of fighting, Jackson's force emerged victorious and returned to Chattanooga. In 1815, General James Kenedy built a sawmill and storehouse at what is now downtown Murfreesboro for use by local farmers. The mill continued operating until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. The first post office in Murfreesboro was established in 1827; however, it did not operate until 1893 when it became part of the Nashville post office system. At that time it was known as "Nashville Post Office". The first land boom period occurred during Reconstruction (1865-1913). Businesses such as plantations and mines attracted large numbers of men looking for work after the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery throughout much of South America and North America on July 12th 1865. Many white men wanted jobs but could not find them because they were required to leave their homes for weeks or months while their families searched for them overseas or south of the border. This led to an influx of black Americans into southern Tennessee during this time as well as many Chinese immigrants who had come overland from Canton through March 1862 aboard ships called "Lien Fung" which arrived at Memphis Harbor before sailing downriver to Clarksville where they landed on May 15th 1862 under heavy military escort headed for Paducah River where they disembarked on April 19th 1863 and began their journey northward across Arkansas Territory (present day Arkansas) en route to Kansas City via Waco( Texas) before arriving there on October 3rd 1863 aboard ship called "USS Hernando". Many mills closed during World War I due to competition from Textile production elsewhere in America; however, some mills reopened after hostilities ceased due to new demand from consumers because textiles were still a major industry after World War I ended (this usually happened when businesses experienced a slump). One example of this reopening activity was Muhlenberg Mills which reopened following World War II with increased production thanks largely to wartime government assistance including shipmentsof goods needed by veteran retail customers back into service - something that has rarely been seen again since then! Murfreesboro is a city in Rutherford County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 17,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rutherford County. Murfreesboro was founded by James Robertson in 1811 as a trading post on the Cumberland River and became an agricultural center with cotton plantations and cattle ranching. In 1915, Murfreesboro became part of the Nashville metropolitan area after it was annexed by that city. The first European to visit what is now Murfreesboro was French explorer Pierre-Louis de La Salle in 1685 when he explored the region for Spain. He named it "Portsmouth" because of its strategic location on both sides of the Cumberland River between Nashville and Chattanooga. Spanish traders soon discovered what had been discovered and began exploring the area as well, founding settlements such as White Sulphur Springs (now Knoxville) in 1765 and Rossville in 1770. The town of Clarksville was founded about two miles south of present-day downtown Murfreesboro by General Andrew Johnson on December 12, 1819 during his first term as Governor of Tennessee. By 1830, Clarksville had become a important transportation hub due to its location at one end of the Santa Fe Trail which connected New Mexico and Texas with Missouri and Kentucky across the Appalachian Mountains. Murfreesboro was founded in 1814 by James Murfreesboro, a Revolutionary War veteran and surveyor. The town grew rapidly after becoming the site of a federal arsenal in the early 1800s. In 1842, Murfreesboro became the first city in Tennessee to be incorporated. The city was named for founder James Murfreesboro and later changed its name to Nashville in 1865. In 1907, Nashville acquired Murfreesboro as part of a merger of several local towns in Middle Tennessee.
