In 1802, Jesse Cox established Nashville as an independent city under common consent with Knoxville, but it was not until 1819 that Nashville became its legal permanent home. In 1814 General John Murfreesboro won a decisive battle against Creek War leader Bowles at Horseshoe Bend which ended hostilities between America and Great Britain for several years On November 11th 1840 Union soldier Nathan Bedford Forrest led his cavalry charges against Confederate forces commanded by Major Robert Ewell at Stones River Bridge northwest of Murphysboro A combined Union/Confederate force numbering around 2500 men attacked 3200 men under Forrest's command resulting in 678 Confederate casualties including 4 officers killed and 23 captured while 5 other soldiers were killed or mortally wounded . On January 9th 1861 Colonel Robert Ewell ordered his army to cross the Cumberland River over Snake Pass east of Corinth into Kentucky Campaign
