The town was founded in 1817 by Captain John Murfreesboro and his wife Sarah Tryon as a small cluster of log cabins on the banks of the Cumberland River. In 1850, a sawmill started operations and soon added an asphalt plant to its production; the mill continued until it closed in 1957. In 1857 Drury Lumber Company merged with Vanderbilt Lumber Company to form the largest lumberyard in America; this became known as Dillard's Department Store after Dillard Brothers department store near Nashville which originated from this merger. The city was founded on December 12, 1796 by John Murfreesboro and his brother Jameson Murfreesboro as a town in what is now Rutherford County. It became a city on January 1, 1867. On November 3rd, 1861, Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House to Union General Ulysses S. Grant and the Confederacy lost all of its assets within hours of surrendering including most of its cotton crop which impoverished many Southern farmers. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built the first major hydroelectric plant in Tennessee at Murfreesboro on the Misery River in 1948-49 to provide power for paper mills along the Cumberland River valley north of Nashville. In 1961 TVA built another major hydroelectric plant at Roanoke Rapids downstream from downtown Murfreesboro which provided power for industrial users near Roanoke Rapids Dam until it was retired in 1984 due to environmental concerns about impacts from mining operations upstream from the dam. Today only one small electric generating station remains operational located just east of downtown Murfreesboro; it provides power for local lights and heat plants operated by municipal government entities such as Chattanooga Electric Utilities Company Most people think about early history when they learn about Murfreesboro because it's where insurgent leader Nathan Bedford Forrest was born on December 12th 1796 and grew up before moving to Memphis to become a general during Reconstruction period there.
