In 1828, David Dudley Moorerand founded Drake University in nearby Decaturville after purchasing land north of Morganton for that purpose. That same year, Murfreesboro began to grow rapidly as more people came to live hereabouts for health reasons or to find work in the new cotton economy being created throughout the region due to new technology developing at Vanderbilt University and other universities across the South during this time period. by 1830 there were 16 businesses operating out of downtown with a population over 100! In 1834-35 an ensuing drought caused many people to leave town for lack of food; however they returned soon enough when prices went down significantly through crop rotation programs run by local farmers which raised corn instead of using water hogskins to cultivate rice paddies). In 1840 William Hogg established a mill complex just southwestof present day Downtown Murfreesboro on Bluegrass Creek which would eventually produce millions dollars worth of cloth each year! The mill closed in 1865 but parts remain standing today including portions of the old administration building housing Belknap High School today! In 1814, General Andrew Johnson arrived in Tennessee and called upon James Murfreesboro to help him build a road between Nashville and Knoxville. This road would serve as an important transportation artery during boththe war years (1781-83) and afterwards. When he left office in 1868, JamesMurfreesboro permanently moved his business operations to Chattanooga so that he could continue to contribute materially to our state's growth. It was only after many years of hard work did he finally receive recognition from our government for his contributions theretofore! JamesMurfreesboro died on October 14th, 1893 at age 83 years old following a long and successful life filled with accomplishment both inside and outside of his community; including but not limited to: being elected Mayor of Chattanooga five times (1924-27; 1929-31; 1933-35; 1937-39), serving as Vice President under Franklin D Roosevelt (1933-35), Chairman Camden County Republican Committee (1945), Member House Appropriations Subcommittee on Post Office & Telecommunications (1977 -1981), Director Boardman County Chamber Commerce Association Incorporated 1961 -1965). In addition to his civic leadership skills well beyond those typical within any given category or field such as politics or business management – this man had an amazing ability not justto connect with others trough words but also through action
Murfreesboro was founded in 1796 by the surveyor and landowner, James Robertson. It became a town on December 12, 1807. The first post office in Murfreesboro was established in 1826. In 1840, the steamboat "Pine Bluff" caught fire west of town and resulted in the loss of life (27 people). A public works project to improve infrastructure led to the construction of many brick buildings throughout Murfreesboro during the late 19th century. By 1907, there were over 150 businesses in town. The townsite grew rapidly after World War I until a housing boom starting around 1930 caused growth to slow down again. Today, Murfreesboro is an economically prosperous city with a diverse population that includes people from all walks of life.
