Murfreesboro was founded in 1813 by General A. P. Hill and was named after General Murfreesboro, Tennessee Militia commander during the War of 1812. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the Cumberland River and its infrastructure including a courthouse, jail, cotton gin, flour mill, post office and several churches. In 1870 it became the county seat for Davidson County and remained so until 1905 when Nashville took over that role. In the early 1800s Murfreesboro was a small town located along the Cumberland River with only a few houses and a few families. By 1830 there were more than 100 people living in the area around what is now downtown Murfreesboro. The growth of Murfreesboro began to wax as development occurred along both sides of the river: eastward from downtown to Old Hickory Bottom (now eastern Williamson County), northwest from Old Hickory Bottom to Bellevue Heights (now western Robertson County), southwest from Bellevue Heights to Springdale (later renamed Clarksville), and southeast from Springdale to Hermitage Springs which is today known as Knoxville. The first store in downtown Murfreesboro was built on High Street in 1833 by John Laddington who later donated land for what is now First Baptist Church on Elm Street near State Capitol Square. In 1840, Colonel John Coker purchased 1,000 acres north of downtown from David Dudley Morton for $1 million dollars which made murFeesborough one of Nashville's most important towns during this time period because itprovided much-needed transportation access across the Cumberland River and into surrounding counties. In 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early occupied Nashville before retreating back across the river at Brentwood Bridge but his army left behind many supplies including cannons and horses which soon caused an abundance of goods available for purchase throughout downtown Nashville amounting to nearly $2 million dollars within just six months following their departure From 1861 through 1865 approximately 60% of all commercial transactions taking place in downtown Nashville were related either directly or indirectly to military operations being conducted inside or outside of Tennessee statewide

In 1865, Nashville became the state capital and Murfreesboro lost its status as the capital. However, it continued to be a major cultural and commercial center until the late 20th century.
