There is no question that the history of firearms in Murfreesboro, Tennessee goes back many years. The town was founded by Revolutionary War veteran John Sevier and his wife Anna in 1796. A law passed in 1911 limited handgun sales to those over 21 years old and made it a felony to possess more than one handgun without a license. On February 22nd of that year, Murfreesboro became the 25th city in the United States to approve concealed carry permits for citizens over 21 years old.

The first settler in Murfreesboro was Ebenezer Horton, who built a small cabin on the current site of downtown in 1816. The town's growth came during the 1830s with land sales and construction of roads and housing developments led by entrepreneur John Huffman. In 1839, Murfreesboro became part of Tennessee Territory when it was created from parts of Mississippi and Alabama. By 1860, its population had reached 20,000 people; within 10 years it had grown to over 50,000 residents thanks to railroad construction and other economic development initiatives spearheaded by Mayor John Witherspoon. During Reconstruction Era efforts to improve race relations following the American Civil War, Murfreesboro played an important role as a center for black political activism and education through various organizations such as Tuskegee Institute; this also helped spur industrialization around the city which has continued toismake Murfreesborougohone one of Tennessees most economically prosperous cities into recent decades.
