A cotton gin operated on Main Street from about 1830 until 1895 when it was replaced by an oil refinery providing employment for several local residents during this time period . Murfreesboro was founded in 1796 by General James Robertson and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Cumberland River, and in 1819 it became a state capital. In 1836, the Tennessee legislature moved Murfreesboro from Knoxville to become the new capital of Tennessee. It remained as such until 1951.
