Murfreesboro is a town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2000 census. The name comes from the Cherokee word "murfee," meaning "a small cottonwood tree." Murfreesboro is located about 15 miles (24 km) north of Knoxville and about 20 miles (32 km) north of Memphis. The first European to explore this land was Jasper Crain in 1790. He named it for General James Robertson, who had conquered much of western Tennessee during the American Revolutionary War. In 1819, Murfreesboro became a city when it was annexed by Knoxville. In 1902, the state of Tennessee granted Murfreesboro its own charter as an incorporated city. As an incorporated city, Murfreesboro enjoyed some limited privileges such as having its own police department and library system but no right to levy taxes or engage in political activism; however, it did gain some rights such as being able to vote on local issues at City Council meetings. In 1960, Murfreesboro became a congressional district that included most of modern-day Knox County and parts of Turner County. The seat moved fromKnoxville to Murfreesboro after the election of John Fenton as representative from that district in 1962. Fenton represented districts until his death in 1975 and then District 3 which included most of current-day Williamson County except for asmall area near Clarksville In 1991–1992 both Representatives Henson and Sweeney were term limited after serving two terms consecutively so their seats were filled by new members pro tempore without any primaries or voting process; this resulted in Representative Henson becoming mayor pro tempore with no vote cast on his appointment After Representative Henson resigned to become Mayor Pro Tempore he was succeeded by Democrat Donnie Bowen who also served as mayor pro tempore until his resignation effective July 1st 2003 thereafter Republican Barry Loudermilk succeeded him
