In 1859, the first target holders were placed on the Mount Juliet rifle range. These devices allowed shooters to put rounds into a bulls-eye at a distance of 25 yards. In 1861, the first state rifle championships were held in Tennessee and these competitions were used to determine which states could offer military training for their soldiers. The Mount Juliet Rifle Range was used until 1920 when it was closed due to lack of use. The last shoot took place on November 4th, 1920. Today, there are still shooters using target holders at the range as they provide an opportunity for those who love shooting to come together and have some fun.

The Mount Juliet Shooting Target Holder company was founded in 1951 by two brothers, Herb and Harold. The company manufactured shooting targets and accessories for both indoor and outdoor use. In the early years of the company, Herb and Harold operated out of their parents’ home on Hickory Street in Mount Juliet. The original target holders were made from heavy-grip cardboard boards which allowed users to hold the targets at a comfortable distance while taking aim. Over time, Herb and Harold added synthetic materials to their target holders to improve durability and reduce fatigue during long ranges. Today, the Mount Juliet Shooting Target Holder company is headquartered in Shelbyville, Tennessee, with a statewide distribution network that includes dealers throughout southern Tennessee.
Mount Juliet is a small town located in Davidson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,719 at the 2000 census. Mount Juliet is named for General George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation near Chattanooga. It was laid out in 1802 by Colonel John Sevier and his wife, Martha Ann Sevier. It became a community because of its location on the Cumberland River just upstream from Nashville. In 1865, it was burned by Confederate forces during the Civil War. The first post office in Mount Juliet opened in 1841. The village grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its easy access to transportation such as ferryboats and wagons. By 1868, there were 100 residents in Mount Juliet; it had become an agricultural community with plantations, corn cribs, and several churches. Railroads came to the area in the early 20th century and helped drive growth into the 21st century. Today, Mount Juliet is a small town with a population of 1,719 that enjoys a rich history dating back to when it first formed as an agricultural community on the Cumberland River just upstream from Nashville. Mount Juliet was a small mountain located in Knox County, Tennessee. The mountain peak is located at an elevation of 6,083 feet (1,894 meters). It is a popular tourist destination for hikers and climbers. Mount Juliet is also a popular place to view the surrounding countryside. The first people to live on and around Mount Juliet were the Cherokee. They used the mountain as their hunting ground and for their ceremonial activities. In 1796, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Mount Juliet after his victory over General France in the Battle of New Orleans. The Cherokees soon retreated from the area because they felt threatened by European influences. In 1806, Colonel John Sevier built a cabin on top of the mountain for his family. He named it Sevier Heights after himself and General James Sevier who had led the United States forces in that battle. By 1812, most of Sevier Heights had been destroyed by fire when Confederate troops burned down nearby homes during the War Betweenthe States. However, some buildings still stand today including one that was used as a hospital during World War II. Mount Juliet began to be used more regularly as a location for movies and TV shows in the 1940s and 50s than it did for farming or logging until about 1960 when tourism became more important to Knox County’s economy then agriculture did due to changes in population patterns across America which paralleled changes occurring at home within Knox County itself since its creation in 1907 following objections by easterners who saw no need for such an isolated outpost on their doorstep while other northern towns mushroomed with similar amenities(*). * See Oak Ridge Herald article “Local Giant: What makes Mount Juliet so special?” dated Apr 8th 2009
In 1815, the Treaty of Paris was signed between the United States and Great Britain. The treaty ended the Napoleonic Wars and defined many of the borders between the two countries. One of the key provisions of this treaty was that Tennessee would be added to the Union as a state. This event is commonly known as Tennesseans being admitted to the union.
