Mount Juliet is one of the few remaining communities in Fayette County that were founded before the turn of the century. The town was named for General John C. After World War II, Mount Juliet became a popular resort town with retirees from all over America and Europe living there until their deaths. The first inhabitants of what is now Mount Juliet were Native Americans who hunted mammoths and other large mammals near present-day La Grange Village on the Cumberland River. In 1786, General George Rogers Clark traveled through Fayette County on his way to fight against French forces during the French and Indian War and discovered an uninhabited area called Roane Creek between present-day Loudonville (now Lebanon) and Chattanooga (now Chattanooga). He named this area Fort Nashborough after Major General Nathanael Greene's headquarters at Nashborough Heights in Virginia during the Revolutionary War. In 1792, Colonel John Sevier organized a militia company known as “The Right Regiment” to protect settlers along Roane Creek from Cherokee Indians led by Chief Wataugawho had threatened to kill them if they did not surrender their land to him. By 1800 there were about seventy people living in what is now Mount Juliet except for two families who resided near La Grange Village on Roane Creek due to raids by Cherokee Indians conducted annually around this time period resulting in the death of many settlers including some children as well as women and old menfolk because they could not escape alive when their homes were raided or burned down. In 1815, the U.S. government purchased land at Mount Juliet in order to build a military fortification against future British invasion. The fort was completed in 1819 and became known as Fort Donelson. It was used as a garrison until the end of the American Civil War in 1865.
