Mount Juliet is a town in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The first settler in what became Mount Juliet was James Robertson in 1792. He and his wife, Susannah White, were the first white people to live in what is now Mount Juliet. The town was platted on October 15, 1802 by John Wilson and David Rankin under the name of "Newburgh". In 1807, a post office called Newburgh was moved from its original location one mile west to where it stands today when the Tennessee Railroad reached that point. In 1810–12, 3 men – all named Robertson – laid out a townsite east of present-day Mount Juliet on land that still includes some of that community's buildings and patches of land. That same year saw the opening of Nashville as an American capital city and many residents relocated to new towns within Sevier County including Mount Juliet which continued to grow rapidly with new settlers until it had a population of 2,500 by 1830; quadrupling that size by 1840 and reaching 10,000 by 1860. This rapid growth led to problems for Newburgh as it didn't have enough room for everyone who wanted to live there; especially since so many people were coming from outside Sevier County looking for a piece of this booming development! In 1835 however Congress passed an act authorizing slavery within limits set forth in the Compromise Of 1850 which effectively ended slavery in Tennessee but not in Mississippi where it continued until 1861 because those states had separate Constitutions (the Union states did not). Consequently muchof eastern Tennessee reverted back into slave territory following the Civil War though some areas such as Mount Juliet retained their free status up until about 1870 when state law finally prohibited slavery again throughout most of easternTennessee excepting certain rural districts (such as West End) which then became slavefree through gradual emancipation laws enacted over time culminating with full freedom granted statewide on July 1st 1870.
