Mount Juliet, Tennessee is an unincorporated community in Cooke County, Tennessee, United States. It lies on the border of Cooke and Williamson Counties. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Mount Juliet was James Matson in 1811. He named his land for John Quincy Adams, 2nd U.S. President and a friend of his from college days. A post office called Mount Juliet was established in 1824, but no residents moved to it until 1829 when Jeptha Goodloe settled there with his family. In 1830–31 a survey by Colonel John Sevier showed that there were three settlements of white people located on or near the summit of Peaks Mountain: one by James Matson; another by Goodloe; and a third by David Etchemendy and others about three miles south-east of where Goodloe had lived. After some discussion among the settlers over whether they should build a fort or not, Sevier ordered all inhabitants to move upriver to what he deemed an more defensible location on Peaks Mountain five miles west of present-day Mount Juliet. The site chosen for the new town was belowpresent-day Bellefontaine Road and east of present-day Hallsville Road (now State Route 127). At least 10 families from Summersborough moved to Mount Juliet before its establishment as part of Sevier's orderlies' brigade during the Mexican War (1846–48). When war ended most residents returned home except for two families who continued to reside permanently at Mount Juliet until their deaths in 1851 and 1865 respectively.
