On Christmas day, General Jackson ordered his troops to retire behind the ridge bordering Greeneville County until further notice because there was no place for them to encamp without Provost Marshal Major James Meeks commanding them in person. Meeks reported back that he could not find any suitable ground for infantry or artillery within range of Chattanooga proper; so Jackson ordered his army into camp at night on December 25th and began preparations for battle the following morning. Unfortunately for Jackson, reinforcements arriving soon after discovered that Meeks had been premature in giving up his command and were instead able to join forces with General David Greene's column northeast of Chattanooga while they stopped short of Mount Juliet itself. That evening Confederate cavalry rode into position just beyond where Meeks' unit had been positioned; this caused major casualties among Union forces who were unable to engage these horsemen until after dark when they withdrew northward under heavy fire from their opponents.
