By 1795, there were about 350 settlers living in what is today Mount Juliet Township. In 1819, John Stephenson purchased 640 acres from James Robertson for $5 per acre ($100 total). He named the land "Mount Juliet" after his late wife's maternal grandmother who had also been named "Sally." In 1870, when Tennessee joined the United States as a state, Mount Juliet became one of its first municipalities. At that time it had a population of just over 500 people and consisted mostly of farmers and their families living near the lumber mills located around town. However, over time things began to change for Mount Juliet as businesses started to open up and more people began moving into town from surrounding counties. By 1990, there were over 4,000 residents living in Mount Juliet township alone and it had become one of Tennessee's most vibrant communities with many cultural attractions such as art galleries and theaters available to visitors alike. Today, while some changes have occurred since then (such as gentrification), overall things are still going strong at Mt Juliet with its rich history & culture!
