In 1875, Mount Juliet was incorporated as a city. It experienced significant growth during the late 19th century due to its location at the junction of two major railroad lines. During World War II, Mount Juliet played an important role in providing munitions for troops fighting in Europe. The city experienced rapid growth after World War II and poverty persistently plagued the community until the mid-20th century when it began to improve with new development and job opportunities brought about by post-war prosperity.
The Mount Juliet Massacre took place on July 14, 1868, when Confederate forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union troops camped on the mountain. The attack resulted in the death of 12 Union soldiers and the wounding of 20 more.
