Grant's presidency. In 1861 the capital of Williamson County moved from Chattanooga to Mount Juliet; it remained as the county seat until 1865 when Nashville took over that role. Although Mount Juliet only contributed one vote (in favor) to Confederate President Jefferson Davis' Electoral College victory over Ulysses S. Grant on November 4th 1860, its citizens did not support secession and voted against joining Tennessee during the early stages of the Civil War because they were worried about potential conflict between themselves and northern Alabama which would be caused by Confederate military activity in their state borderlands After initial skirmishes along federal lines occurred near Knoxville and Murfreesboro during 1862-1863 - largely without consequences for either side - most residents turned their attention inward towards trying to find an acceptable compromise solution prior to full-blown war starting .
