Mount Juliet, Tennessee is a small town located in Johnson County, Tennessee. The population was 4,859 as of the 2010 census. The Mount Juliet Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The first mention of Mount Juliet can be found in 1499 when French traders named it "Montjoie" after the mountain peak north of town. In 1797, General James Wilkinson and his army stopped at Montjoie while traveling from Kentucky to White Clay Creek. Wilkinson's men were so impressed by the sight that they named the mountain after him- Wilkinson Hill or "Mount Juliet." In 1814, during the War of 1812, American Major George Rogers Clark and his force passed through Johnson County while on their way to cross the Cumberland River. Aftermath of that battle resulted in many Native Americans being captured and taken to Canada where they were sold into slavery. In 1819, Mount Juliet's first post office opened with mail service coming from Nashville four times a day. By 1830, there were only four residents living in town proper- all farmers who raised livestock or horticulture. However, like most small towns around this time period, business began to dwindle as people turned towards larger cities for work opportunities and transportation became more available than ever before thanks to railroads reaching America eastward. By 1840 only seventy-four people lived in town proper; many had left for better prospects elsewhere within Jackson County or beyond due to increasing violence and poverty among those still residing hereabouts despite economic difficulties faced by everyone else around them including plummeting commodity prices and an influx of Irish immigrants looking for a better life opportunity didn't help matters either). That same year saw what would become known as "The Great Famine", which struck Ireland hard following years of political turmoil culminating with a famine that killed over 6 million people across most parts Asia Minor including much of upper Tennessee which suffered heavily due specifically to lack Of food supplies brought over by British forces during their occupation (specifically at Battle of Pea Ridge where 3/5ths'of all Johnston County was destroyed)). Mount Juliet, located in Knox County, Tennessee, is a small town that has been around since the 1800s. The town was founded by pioneers who arrived in the area in the early 1800s. Mount Juliet was originally known as Greeneville and it was renamed to Mount Juliet because of its proximity to Lookout Mountain. The population of Mount Juliet increased rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to the influx of settlers from Kentucky and other parts of southeastern Pennsylvania. In 1907, members of the Knox County Board of Education recommended that the name be changed to Jackson because there were already several towns in Jackson County with similar names. After much discussion, the board voted in favor of changing Mount Juliet's name to Jackson after President Andrew Jackson. The name change occurred on October 1, 1907 and became effective January 1, 1908. The first post office at Mount Juliet opened on December 10th, 1814. It served as an important stop for travelers traveling between Nashville and Memphis. By 1835, Mount Juliet had a school and a store Committee had decided that it would make more sense for one small town to have two post offices- one serving both rural areas and one serving downtown- so they elected trustees to manage these two posts simultaneously until such time as a new Postmaster General could be appointed who could operate them singlehandedly.
