Morristown is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Dutch word "mors" meaning death and "town" meaning place of settlement. Morristown was founded in 1814 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a small trading post on the Cumberland River. It became an agricultural center with livestock and corn production becoming dominant during the early 19th century. In 1881, Morristown became a city when it annexed neighboring Gallatinville. In 1984, Morristown withdrew from the Memphis metropolitan area and became an independent city again. The town began as a small traders post on the Cumberland River east of present-day Nashville. John Dickson erected a log cabin in what is now downtown Morristown on December 8, 1814. The first permanent settler in what would become Morristown was James Morrison who arrived in October 1815 from Scotland with his family; he named his cabin Beaver Dam Creek after nearby Beaverdam Dam Creek near where he had been living before moving to this location. By 1830, many Scots-Irish immigrants had arrived in Marshall County and begun to settle around Beaverdam Creek and surrounding sites including present day downtown Morristown along with adjacent towns of Kingston (now Lebanon), Easton (now Hillsboro), Clarksville (now Decatur), Rutherfordton (now Kingsport) and West Union (now Greeneville). In 1881, following annexation by Memphis of nearby Gallatinville, Morristony withdrew from that metropolitan area entirely and became an independent city once again under its own government ordinances rather than through statements or directives from Memphis authorities theretofore governing that portion of Metro Tennessee which included bothGallatinville City files generally being kept within those same files but separate statistical reports released jointly by both agencies were prepared reflecting individual civic activity within our respective jurisdictions regardless of whether either file bore any official title such as “City of Memphis” designation or not until finally upon separation into their individual entities each decided they desired their own titles/statutory names etcetera essentially creating two very different Governments operating within oneanother without any overall unity or cohesiveness whatsoever despite both having municipal boundaries contained therein still continuing to report joint statistical data unless specifically noted otherwise herein
The Morristown community was founded in 1817 by a group of Scots-Irish immigrants. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, it had a population of over 1,000 people. By the 1840s, Morristown had started to attract African Americans as well as European Americans. In 1847, the first black school was opened in the community. Morristown became an important manufacturing center during the 19th century. Many businesses and factories were built in and around Morristown, including Buchanan’s sawmill, the Armstrong brewery, and Lord & Taylor clothing store.
