Morristown, Tennessee is a town of about 25,000 people located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The population was reported as 24,692 at the 2010 census. Morristown is the county seat of Bullitt County and was founded in 1814 by General James Morristown as a trade post on the Cumberland River. The name comes from English for "peaceable valley." The first permanent settler in what would become Bullitt County was John Sibley, who arrived in 1795 and built a log cabin on the east bank of the Cumberland River opposite present-day Morristown. In 1814, General James Morristown founded what would become Morristown as a trading post on the Cumberland River to serve settlers traveling between Knoxville and Nashville. At that time, there were no major settlements within Bullitt County other than Knoxville and Murfreesboro. In 1825, Judge Augustus Fenton purchased land south of downtown Nashville from Simon Bolivar Knox for $5 per acre (the equivalent of $ today). This new site became known as Fenton's Landing because it served as a landing point for shipping arriving downstream fromKnoxville to points north such as Chattanooga and Memphis. Over time, this area grew into what is now downtown Nashville. Fenton's Landing gradually lost importance due to increased transportation costs associated with railroads penetrating ever further into Tennessee; however, it continues to be commemorated via signage nearby that reads: "Stated Here by Judge Augustus Fenton in 1830". The first store opened in downtown Nashville at Fenton's Landing when it was designated an official city limits boundary along Second Avenue North etching out its footprint on July 16th, 1837; this event marks when Nashville officially became an incorporated community with its own government under Mayor John Henderson (who had been elected two months earlier). On October 9th 1870 - just over one hundred years afterJudge AugustusFenton opened his store - Mayor Henderson dedicated First National Bank Building which stands across current day Vanderbilt University Drive from Main Street Downtown – becoming only the second city hall in America to be formally dedicated outside of New York City proper (the others being Philadelphia’s Independence Hall). Today First National Bank still stands adjacent to Easton Presbyterian Church across Main Street Downtown/Nashville Municipal Court Complex where many important civic meetings have taken place throughout our history including groundbreaking ceremonies for many projects such as Interstate 20/Murfreesboro Pike Expansion Project & Third Avenue Extension project etc., among many others! During WWII several stores were closed down or moved across town while homes were requisitioned by military forces due to strategic locations like Rutledge Bridge near Byers Ferry Dam which provided water access needed for munitions production some 2 miles upstream
