Morristown is a town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. The name comes from English General John Morriston who fought in the American Revolutionary War and in the Battle of Yorktown. The first European to visit what is now Morristown was Captain James Robertson on October 3, 1763 when he set out from Nashville with two small boats laden with goods for traders on the Cumberland River. He named his landing "Newburgh" after Newburgh, Scotland which he had visited while exploring that country. Robertson's explorations led him to believe that there were valuable natural resources lying ahead in this area and so he began construction of a log courthouse and jail at what is now downtown Morristown on November 5, 1763. That same year, however, British forces burned down the courthouse and jail complex as part of an effort to quell Uprising against British rule in America known as the American Revolution. In 1802, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and decided to move westward following his victory over Richard Nixon in the presidential election that year. He selected Morristown as his new headquarters because it offered easy access to wagon roads leading into central Tennessee and because it would be inexpensive to construct military posts along those routes. Jackson also chose Morristown asthe site for a national defensive fortification called Fort Donelson which would serve as a model for similar forts built throughout America during the Second World War. In 1803-4, construction began on Fort Donelson but soon ran into problems due to poor weather conditions and engineer difficulties; by 1805 only about 50% of the fort was complete. When war broke out between Mexico and Texas in1846, more than 10,000 Tennesseans volunteered their services under Colonel Edward Hogg (qv) commandant atFort Donelson; many units Suffered heavy losses including 4 officers killed or mortally wounded within six weeks of its opening on April 15th 1850(or March 25th if you include Hogg's death). As word spread through trade centers throughout America about impending hostilities between Mexico and Texas thousands more Tennesseans responded voluntarily or were drafted into military service; by September 30th 1846 almost all remaining buildings atFort Donelsonhad been destroyed by fire or storm damage(and probably most likely looted). By early 1862 only 2/3rds of FortDonelsonwas still standing although much of its original artillery had been replaced by Union guns captured during battle around Chattanooga Heights). On July 16th 1861 Confederate forces succeeded in scaling walls surrounding & capturingFtDonelson resultingin virtually total destruction& lossofproperty & life Including Colonel Hogg who surrendered unconditionally just before midnight on July 17th 1861.).
