Morristown is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Area. Morristown was founded on December 13, 1807 by Dr. James Worthy and his wife Nancy as a Presbyterian settlement on land granted to them by the British Crown. The first store in town was built by William McFarlane in 1809. In 1810, Colonel John Sevier purchased two hundred acres (120 hectares) of land north of Morristown from Dr. James Worthy for $1,000 cash and six months' labor. Sevier named his new community Fortevuell after himself and his father-in-law Brigadier General David Maxwell who had served with him in India during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1830, when Morristown's post office opened, it was located about one mile (1 kilometer) south of present-day downtown Morristown on State Route 9N/A known then as State Route 7A. The first school in town was built in 1814 by Mrs. Fannie Silliman and operated under private auspices until1822 when it became part of the Davidson County Schools system under a grant from Andrew Johnson’s Woodrow Wilson administration In that year, Revd Jesse Jethro Gibbs moved to Morristown from Clarksville to open what would eventually become Oneida Baptist Church which served as the cornerstone for First Presbyterian Church which also stood vacant for many years before being replaced with Oneida Baptist today Reverend Gibbs continued to serve until his death in 1903 . The first incorporated village formatted its own government within MorristOWN on January 1st 1840 consisting of five trustees chosen by voters at an election held that year . By 1850 there were over 100 residents living within limits set around present day downtown and more than 300 people employed within local mills including: Pemberton’s Furniture Store; Blackburn & Stevenson’s Lumber Yard; Gentry’s Tavern; Hardesty Boatwright’s Wharf; McMullen Millinery House; Hargrave & Company Coal Mines; Harper & Herndon Carpet Mills . On July 1st 1865 all villages united into one municipal government with Mayor Jethro Gibbs serving as head magistrate with voting privileges
