Morristown is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Morristown was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1814 as a place for night school and agricultural purposes. The first store was built in 1816. Morristown became an incorporated municipality in 1902. The town's namesake, General George Washington Morrison, played an important role in its development and served as mayor from 1892 to 1895 and again from 1901 to 1903. He donated land for the original Morristown Schoolhouse which opened on November 5, 1814. The second store also opened in 1816 and quickly became one of the most popular local businesses. In addition to its retail establishments, Morristown also boasted a number of schools: one middle school (1822), two high schools (1835), and three academies (1868). By 1890, the population had grown sufficiently so that it began to demand more services such as Streets & Roads Department and Parks Department which were not available within the incorporated municipality yet because of lack of funding or space available within hardin county limits at that time!
