Morristown was founded in 1814 by General John Brown and named for the Morriston estate in England. The first post office in Morristown was established on October 3, 1814. The town was originally one of thirteen initial settlements set up around the new Fort Knox Military Post on July 16, 1815 by Major General James Wilkinson as part of his drive against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The post served as a supply depot and garrison until it closed on November 15, 1821. The towns of Clarksville and Manchester were established nearby soon after to take advantage of Fort Knox's resources. The original courthouse building still stands today—it has been used as a schoolhouse, Baptist church, county jail, and other government buildings over the years. In 1840s family physician Drury built what is now called Drury's Pharmacy on Church Street east of downtown Morristown. The pharmacy continues to serve today with an adjacent restaurant/bar called Drury's Place which opened in 1993 after being vacant for several years In 1862 Union general Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded Mississippi and captured Corinth from Confederate forces under Confederate general Pemberton; this event helped spur white Southerners to support Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation that year Lincoln appointed Judge David Hogg as territorial governor of Middle Tennessee shortly after Forrest’s defeat; Hogg had earlier been assistant justice commissioner for Jackson County On December 12th 1861–13th 1861 Colonel John Millington replaced Colonel William Tatum who had resigned due to ill health Millington served until May 1863 when he took command of First Brigade Second Division Third Corps Army Corps during Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign Aftermath: Battle of Peachtree Creek November 17-20 1865 resulted in loss or capture by Sherman’s army many high ranking officers including generals Aptheker (captured), Patten (captured) & Beall (captured)
