The first settlers of what would become Morristown were white men who moved from North Carolina in 1795 and arrived in what is now Hardin County. In 1819, Morristown became part of Hardin County and was renamed for John MORRIS (1763-1848), one of Tennessee's first senators and a member of the United States Congress from 1813-1815. Morris also served as governor of Tennessee from 1830-1833 and 1839-1841. During World War II, Morristown played a critical role in providing food for troops stationed in Europe. A large Army Ammunition Plant was built here between 1945 and 1948; it remains one of America's largest munitions factories today. After WWII, Morristony began to lose its importance as an agricultural center due to technological advances such as tractor production at nearby Chattanooga Area Motors Corporation (CAMCO).
