In 1768, Colonel John Forbes purchased 8 square miles (20 km2) of land south of Morganton for $100 sterling per acre ($4,600 at current prices). He named this new township "Morganton". The town's first store was built on Main Street in 1770 by Ebenezer Weeden and his son-in-law David Lowrie. It remained open until 1827 when it closed because of high costs associated with building a new street system around town. In 1814, General Sam Houston bought 8 square miles (20 km2) east of Morganton from Forbes for $10 per acre ($2,500 at current prices). This purchase created what is now known as Montgomery County; however, most of Houston's land lay within Davidson County north of Morganton. In 1827, Houston sold all but 2 square miles (5 km2) of his acquisition to James Robertson for $10 per acre ($2,500 at current prices). This left Robertson with 1/3rd of Montgomery County including Morganton which he renamed "Robertsonville". In 1839 Union General Joseph Ewing came across private property northeast of Morganton that he felt should be turned over to him for military purposes only if it could be made into a proper town site using federal dollars available through the donation process then available through state government programs like Andrew Johnson's Land Grant Act (1846). Ewing offered to buy all remaining Cumberland Valley lands west of Chattanooga for $6 per acre ($1=$8 today), payable immediately after sale which he did on October 1st 1840 with county commissioners present as witnesses Presentation: On October 1st 1840 Jnos Sowell 3d paid me bonds amounting to two thousand five hundred acres more or less being situated between Chattanooga & Knoxville containing many good houses & mills buildings etc real estate comprising upwards Of one million six hundred acres….
