In 1853, Morristown became an officially incorporated village with a post office and Male Institutional Church (now Baptist First Baptist Church). In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Morristown while on his way to Knoxville for an important campaign rally against slavery. During this visit, he metwith some of Ladd's colonists who were living nearby and impressed with their cleanliness and hard work ethic He ordered them to begin construction of a wagon road connecting Knoxville with eastern Kentucky so that slaveholders could be transported south without having to journey through southern states such as Kentucky which supported slavery. This action helped spur industrial growth in Morristony throughout Reconstruction period; businesses such as wharfmasters/foundry workers' unions started up shortly after Lincoln's visit while farmers began growing fields of cotton following market demand for this valuable crop during these difficult times.(1) Accordingly, between 1870-1920 Morris Township lost over 60% of its resident population due primarily to emigration among black Americans abandoning rural areas across central Appalachia during these years.(2) However, despite these negative effects onMorris Township’s demographics there has been little change since then – steady economic growth continues today with over 150 businesses operating within local boundaries alone.(3) Morris Township is located adjacent both upstream (to downtown Knoxville)and downstream (to Rutherford County), making it easily accessible by transportation form either direction(4). Interstate 35 runs just north-northwest of town limits concurrent with Ulysses S Grant Boulevard carrying traffic down Main Street towards downtownKnoxville before turning southwest onto I-75 exit 207B just past where US-71 intersects I-35W/SR 20E heading into Rutherford County becoming Little Rock Road once I-75 enters Alabama(5). Other major thoroughfares include SR 161 eastbound leading into downtown Chattanooga before turning northwest towards Murphysboro while SR 3 leads southeast out of town paralleling RR 611 south until terminating at SR 411 southbound exiting I-35W just past where Pigeon Forge Rd begins
