Morristown, Tennessee is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,865 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The first permanent settler in present-day Morristown was Isaac Campbell and his family who platted it around 1799 on land that had been part of Knox County. In 1825, Colonel Wm. Hays organized the Hardin County militia and named the town for General James Wilkinson who had commanded one of the brigades under General Andrew Jackson during the Battle of New Orleans (1829). The first store opened in Morristown on December 16, 1825 by Isaac Campbell and his brother-in-law James Caldwell. The town quickly grew thanks to its location near a military post and its accessibility to trade with other counties in Tennessee and Kentucky. By 1830, Morristown had a courthouse, jail, schoolhouse and many businesses including several cotton ginners. A courthouse fire destroyed most of downtown Morristown on May 21st, 1835 but fortunately no loss resulted from this event as all court business moved to new facilities located east of town later that year. In 1840s many settlers came to Morristown from surrounding counties such as Williamson and Robertson because they found good farmland there despite some lack of water availability due to mountains in between ridges in the Appalachian Mountains. In 1850s much development took place with an influx of white people when slaves were freed from plantations in Mississippi following the American Civil War which led to an increased demand for lots for sale within hardscrabble rural areas like those around Morristown like Calloway Valley where slavery still prevailed although numerous free African Americans lived nearby until after Reconstruction ended in 1865 when their status changed from tenant farmer to full slaveholdersstatus under Jim Crow laws throughout much southern America In 1861 while Confederate soldiers were invading Tennessee they burned down two Negro churches Congregationalist Parish (now First Baptist) at Main Street & Elm Streets east side; Second Presbyterian Church also at Main Street & Elm Streets west side; these events were followed by four days of violence across Hardin County culminating with an attack by 10 or 12 militiamen against local black residents known as "the nightingale party" caused by anger over burnt buildings After Union troops captured Knoxville early 1862 Confederate forces withdrew into Chattanooga while northern forces continued their campaign against Confederates throughout late 1862/early 1863 called "The Overland Campaign" which culminated with Confederate capitulation at Appomattox Court House April 9th 1865 . After Confederate defeat sword hand Nelson Mandela served time sentences totaling more than 50 years for crimes committed during South Africa's apartheid era
