Morristown is a city in Cocke County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,591 at the 2010 census. Morristown is the county seat of Cocke County. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Morristown was Nicholas Lyon in 1792. He and his family built a log cabin on Big Sandy Creek about two miles northeast of present-day Morristown on land that he purchased from the Chickasaw Nation for $10 per acre (equivalent to ). The Lyon family remained there until 1803 when they moved to their current location. In 1806, General Andrew Jackson founded the town of Murfreesboro as a military camp near what is now downtown Morristown while still living at His Mansion in Jackson Purchase Township. In 1814, Murfreesboro became the capital of Tennessee and continued to be so until 1861 when Nashville took over as the state capital. In 1818, Jno Biddle donated land which formed today's east side of downtown Morristown along Big Sandy Creek. This donation allowed for construction of one of America's first breweries - First National Brewing Company - which opened its doors on July 1, 1830. By 1870, most businesses had closed due to railroad competition and lack of available space within town limits; however, First National survived and reopened under new ownership as Third National Brewery before closing its doors again in 1984. In 1860s and 1870s much development occurred around what are today Main Street (north) and Court Avenue (south), cornering then Service Road/Route 66; this included both housing developments such as Queens Quarters (now University City) on Main Street between Court Avenue/Route 66 and Service Road/Route 671 southward; also developing were small cotton plantations located off service roadsides with access only through backyards or alleys leading directly into these properties; these plantations continue up through recent years into very low income neighborhoods adjacent to modern day schools expansions across several blocks north-south along Interstate 40W serving eastern Chattanooga suburbs since those areas have become more economically developed since early 1960s following loss or departure by many large manufacturers who left Appalachia during Great Depression entire region . Asmor township had 11 residents when it became an incorporated municipality; however only six of those residents voted on incorporation proceedings because they objected to having to deal with city hall officials whose powers they felt exceeded their abilities as citizens of their own township! In 1984 Morristown voters approved annexation by nearby Williamson County making it part of that county's government for all purposes including taxation but retaining its name as an independent municipal entity known as "Morris Township."
