Millington was founded by planters in 1859 as a cotton plantation town. It became an important center for manufacturing during the 19th century and early 20th century. After World War II it experienced decline as production shifted to newly developed areas of the country. However, since 2000 milling activity has resumed and Millington has seen growth in its economy as a result.Millington is located on U.S. Route 62/Tennessee State Route 191 west of downtown Memphis and east of Johnson City proper. According to the 2010 census, Millington has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²). The first settlers in what is now Millington were farmers who arrived from Georgia in 1859 following the American Civil War. They named their community after local mountaintop Thickets which they thought resembled Millsborough in England because of its resemblance to several hills around that city at that time (the mountain was renamed Mount Carmel when it was donated to Knox County by General John Sevier). By 1865, some fifty families had settled there and farming continued until 1880 when large-scale cotton plantations began to be established throughout central Tennessee . From 1880 through 1910, mills operated here producing both yarn and cloth products such as jeans and overalls; also produced were coal tar asphaltum (now known as bitumen) used on roadsides throughout America A new cotton gin opened up in 1915 along with other factories making everything from clothing fabrics to tires In 1940, following World War II , milling ceased completely due largely to technological advances which made more efficient use of natural gas instead of water power for textile processing
