Millington, Tennessee is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 692 at the 2010 census. It is located in the central part of the county and is bordered by the community of Corinth to the south and east, and Knoxville to the north. According to the United States Census Bureau, Millington has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²), all of it land. The first settlement in what is now Millington was made on December 15, 1819 when two families from Lebanon moved into what is now Hardin County. In 1821, General James Longstreet's army rested during its march through Hardin County after defeating John Brown's forces at Perryville Gap. A group of men from Lebanon decided to make their own farm in what is now Millington and named it "Lebanon". By 1830, about 25% of the population had arrived in what would become Millington from other parts of Hardin County. In 1835, Colonel James Wickersham bought 1/3 interest in a tract that included present-day Millington from David Crayhart for $200. Wickersham renamed his new land "Lenoir", after one of his brothers who had died young while serving with General Andrew Jackson's forces during the Mexican–American War. During Reconstruction period (1865-1877), many African Americans were brought into Millington as slaves before being sold or freed.[1] They worked on farms around town until 1865 when most were free and resident there only temporarily while they awaited freedom ceremonies or retribution against their owners by local white mobs which sometimes burned down black homes.] In 1870-71 an election took place for representatives on both floors of the hardicounty courthouse; Elijah Bledsoe (Republican) won with 71%ofthe vote but he resigned due to ill health soon afterwards; Augustus Coleman won appointment as successor with 21%. Coleman probably ran because he wanted access to public lands that had been leased out for oil production near Lenoir Lake by Jeptha Hachtel & Sons Oil Company & Co., although this company never actually drilled any wells within sight or reach of Lenoir Lake itself! Ashley Thompson also ran unsuccessfully for office as a Democrat prior to his death in 1901 leaving vacant that seat until 1906 when William Ladd took office after winning an election over Independent candidate Dickson Lovejoy Sr.. After World War I ended and much economic restructuring throughout eastern Tennessee following entry into American Union occurred including significant rural flight,[6] little change happened until 1925 when McMillin organized herding cattle drive into hernia valley some 20 miles northwestward along McGhee River Valley[7][8][9][10] between present day Knoxville Road Northeast corner US Highway 27 Business Northwest exit[11], thence west along said road NW 10 miles to present day intersection with US Highway 27 Business Northwest; thence southwesterly along said highway NW 10 miles past present day intersection with US Highway 27 Business Northwest[12]; whereupon McMillin severed connection between herders' campground areas lying east and west side thereof about 2 ½ mile long each starting at junction points established therein by McLaughlin’s organization
