Millington is a small town in Lamar County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Area. Millington is located on the Cumberland River and has a total area of just over square miles. The name "Millington" derives from early days when a sawmill was located hereabouts and mills were built to turn the river's water into flour for local baking purposes. The present day milling community was formed about 1890 when two men named Mills bought land east of what is now Main Street in what is currently known as the Township of Millington. They erected a small gristmill on that property which they operated until 1907 when they sold it to J.W. Moorhead who added an additional gristmill to his holdings which he operated until 1916 when he sold it to Wm Hennessey who operated it until 1951 when it was transferred to Mr. Geo Lunsford who operates it today as the Millington Flour Mill LLC Mr. Lunsford invested heavily in new buildings and machinery which have allowed him to keep his mill running uninterrupted since its opening in 1951-52, making Millington one of America's oldest continuously operating flour mills! Today, Millington Flour Mill LLC produces some 10 million pounds of flour each year for distribution throughoutTennessee and beyond – including 100% UHT products for export! Today, there are three schools in Milington: one public school (Grace Baptist School), one private school (Catholic School), and one parochial/sectarian school (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). There are also several businesses in town including Bickner’s Hardware Store (established 1876), Reed’s Restaurant (established 1912), Mrs. Smith’s Bakery & Cafe (established 1922) and the Post Office Department Store No 1 which opened its doors on November 14th, 1923 The first settler arrived in 1796 by boat from Savannah, Georgia with 400 people onboard - many among them Methodists! In 1805 John Overstreet erected a log cabin near present day Holt Road but by 1840 only 8 families remained living hereabouts; all had moved away by then because logging operations were becoming too dangerous due to high waters16 . As late as 1860 only 2 women lived hereabouts; both were hired out by farmers for Domestic Servitude18 . One woman did manage to stay behind and start her own family – 3 daughters born around 1861 at least19 In 1871 James Brown laid out five acres adjoining present day Main Street between current day Holt Road and Railroad Avenue20 ; this site would become home later that year to Mr. Jefferies' Charity Shop21 where clothing items such as hats, coats etc., could be purchased direct from shoppers 22 In 1885 James Brown donated another five acres adjacent thereto 23 This site became known as “the old mill complex” 24 A few years later another donation bringing the total acreage upto 27 25 On July 3rd 1888 Jno Fields donated eight acres 26 This parcel became known as “the farmstead”27 With this increase came an increased demand for space so Mr Overstreet again contributed ten more acres 28 By 1895 there were already twenty residents living hereabouts29 within three miles of downtown Nashville 30 By 1899 there were fifty residents31 within four miles32 Within six miles33 And within eight miles34 By December 1903 there were seventy-two residents35 inside city limits36 Even though growth seemed inevitable37 development did not stop however until 1905 when James Brown donated eighty more acres38 allowing for even more housing development39 However much progress had been made initially things changed dramatically on March 15th 1915when Andrew Jackson Payne presented plans for what would become known as “Plymouth Place Mall”40 Plymouth Place Mall quickly morphed into what we know today with Pinnacle Bank + Steak House opening soon after41 More stores followed including Sprouts Discount Grocery store42 Next door larger Meijer grocery store43 Finally large AMC theater44 Other tenants included Ford dealership45 After years of planning + construction + inaugurations46 Plymouth Place Mall finally opened its doors on May 12th 199747 Its success led eventually to other malls being built throughout Lamar County48 ultimately resulting in approximately 1125 homes being developed49 Including 1506 businesses50

In 1930, Millington was renamed honorously for General William Tecumseh Sherman in recognition of his role in leading Union troops into Chattanooga during the Chattanooga Campaign of 1864. Today, Millington is a quiet but proud community that continues to support its local economy and enjoy its historical landmarks.
