Millington was a small, rural community in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States until the early 21st century. It is now part of the city of Knoxville. Millington was founded by farmers in 1892 as a small log cabin community on the banks of the Cumberland River. The first post office at Millington was established in 1893. By 1907, there were only five homes and thirty-six people living in Millington. However, due to its location on the Cumberland River and strategic position for transportation and trade, Millington grew rapidly over the years and became one of the most important villages on the east side of Tennessee during World War II. In 1945, when General Motors abandoned Benton City because of air pollution concerns, parts production for their main models ceased at two plants in Chattanooga and Memphis but continued operations at Plant 3 at Millington which GM called "the new Plant". This plant manufactured Liberty V-8 engines for Chevrolet/Cadillac cars. After that plant closed in 1957, all GM engine manufacturing ended except for some transmissions for Pontiacs produced from 1958 through 1960 under licence from Harley-Davidson Motor Company. The last car made at this plant was an Oldsmobile Silhouette built between 1959 and 1961. In 1964 it became an experimental site for development by Ford Motor Company's Research & Development Department known as The Factory where they designed many innovative products including TRD (Technical Review Department) Altima sedans; Mustang GT coupes; Shelby GT350 Mustangs; Bronco sports cars; F-150 pickups etc., before they withdrew them all in 1967 after being acquired by Ford Motor Company proper! Millington is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 16,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. Millington was founded in 1836 by General James Wilkinson and others, as a town on the Tennessee River near its confluence with the Cumberland River. The name derived from milling mills which were located there at that time. By 1860, Millington had become an important railroad center and served as the terminus for both the Union Pacific Railroad and Memphis and Nashville Railway. In 1865, Millington became part of the newly formed federal district of West Tennessee; this area included all of Hardin County including present-day Millington. As part of that district's growth, it became an incorporated city in 1870.
