Scope mounts are devices that allow the attachment of a telescope to a rifle or shotgun. Scope mounts have been used for centuries and there are many different types available. The most common type is the Weaver-style mount, which has two circles that fit over each other. When the scope is tightened down on this mount, it creates a compression fit and prevents movement of the telescope. Other types of mounts include Harris-type mounts, which use four circles that fit around each other in a U-shape, and Arca-type mounts, which use three circles that fit around each other in an X shape. The first scopemounts were created in 1536 by Johannes Gutenberg and his brother Matthias with a design called the "Gutenberg Type", which was used to attach a telescope to a Reformation Bible printer known as the Wittenberg Bible press. These early telescopes had very small aperture and could only be used for astronomical observations.
