In 1846 James Witherspoon built a millinery shop on Main Street which still exists as a business today known as Witherspoon's Antiques & Fine Jewelry store #1A in Millington. This millinery shop provided many jobs for local women during the late 19th century with their skills being used to make hats, bonnets and gloves for those living around town. During World War I over 100 men from Millington enlisted in the army and served throughout Europe including 11 who died in action including one man who was killed while mining coal near by! Postwar growth brought new life to Millington with businesses opening up such as Sears & Roebuck opening a department store in 1951 followed by JCPenney opening its own department store called Park Place Shopping Center just down the street from where Walmart now stands located adjacent to First Baptist Church on Woodward Avenue!

Millington, Tennessee is a small town located in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. It was founded in 1853 by Captain James A. Milligan and his wife Elizabeth. The first store in Millington was built on the present site of the town hall. The millinery industry became important to Millington after it was discovered that natural dyes could be produced using a variety of woods and minerals found in the area. The millinery industry declined after World War II, but has revived in recent years with the development of online sales. The first settlers in what is now Millington were farmers who arrived around 1810. By 1830, there were more than 30 families living in Millington. There were two stores, one blacksmith shop, and four tanneries before the Civil War began. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E Lee called for all Tennesseans to fight for their country or leave it behind. Many men from Millington volunteered to serve as soldiers or sailors, including Captain Milligan who served as captain of artillery on board USS Picket Point ( CSS Georgia ). After the war ended, many residents returned home and continued farming until 1945 when electric lights were introduced into town square . During World War II, many businesses closed due to wartime shortages of materials such as aluminum and steel however some survived through post-war growth led by new business owners such as Karen & Tom Whitehead who opened a grocery store at Union Station which became an anchor tenant for local businesses downtown . In 1984 David Mead purchased a controlling interest in Wilson Rubber Company which made tires for Ford Motor Company throughout North America In 1990 Mellon family sold company to Japanese investors who decided not to continue production
Millington was founded in 1827 by a group of Scotsmen who named it after the mill they had seen on the banks of the Tennessee River. The milling community grew quickly, and by 1830 there were more than 100 people living here. In 1854, when the area was organized as a town, Millington had a population of about 500 residents. By 1870, however, the population had decreased to about 150 people and by 1890 it had dropped to just 12 people. The mill closed in 1921 and eventually fell into disrepair. It was bought by a company that converted it into an office building and then abandoned it for years. In 1978, however, construction began on restoring the mill buildings and in 1984 they reopened as the Millington Historical Museum.
