Millington is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Millington is part of the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Millington was Isaiah Wilkinson in 1814. He built a log cabin on the current site of the civic center and named it Wilkinson's Mills after himself and his brother-in-law, James Wilkinson. In 1825, Ezekiel Coleman settled near present day Millington on land that he had purchased from Wilkinson. A post office called Coleman's Mills was established in 1826, and remained in operation until 1964. In 1830, John Coker settled in what is now Millington and platted what would become the town of Millington on July 8, 1830. His plat included a road running northeast to southwest through his community which became known as Coker Road today. Coker also donated land for a public school which would serve the residents of Millington and surrounding towns until it was closed by law in 1907 due to budget cuts by then Governor Andrew Johnson. In 1835, Hiram Berry began production of cornmeal at his mill located about northwest of present day Millington on Creek Fork creek east of modern day Highway 231 (now Cumberland Pike). The mill continued operations until 1865 when it burned down due to an accident involving some flour being mistaken for coal oil during a fire watch. At this point Berry had already founded Berry Corn Mill Company with other partners including David Hoggard and Elijah Beavers who operated the mill from 1865-1868 before it also caught fire; both men were killed in the fire . After their deaths ,the company passed out into private hands where it continued to be run by descendants until shutdown by federal government forces during World War II . Millington, Tennessee is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Millington's history dates back to 1821 when a group of settlers from Kentucky arrived and built a log cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River. The first post office was established in 1825. In 1865, Millington became one of three towns in Hardin County when it was created from parts of Knoxville and Maury City. On February 12, 1869, Millington had its own school district which lasted until 1921. In 1941, milling operations were halted due to World War II shortages of aluminum and other materials needed for war production. The remaining mills closed in 1948 and 1949-50; however they reopened as hobby plots around 1960-70%. During that time there were also several restaurants and stores located in town; including two gasoline stations which remain open today (one now being used as a community center). By 1990 only two businesses remained: an insurance agency and a convenience store (now known as Hometown Pizza). In 2000 Millington passed through an economic downturn caused by the Great Recession which has seen many jobs lost across the state of Tennessee within the manufacturing sector alone. The town was named for General James Milligan, who led a military expedition against the Cherokee in 1795. The first mill on the present site was built in 1800. In 1820, the Tennessee Central Railroad arrived and mills were moved to new locations throughout the county. Millington's population peaked at 30,000 in 1940 but declined to 15,000 by 1960. Today, it has a population of 10,500.
