Millington has been located on the Cumberland River since 1793 and started as a small settlement on the banks of the river. The first mill was built in 1800 by Colonel James Robertson and it became known as "The Old Mill". In 1803, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Millington while campaigning against Native Americans and ordered all the men to leave their homes. The millers went into hiding and when they were finally found they were given back their homes and businesses. In 1865, General Jubal Early invaded Tennessee and burned most of Nashville before retreating south. A group of millers decided to stay behind and started rebuilding their homes which had been destroyed by the fire. They named their new town after General Early. When General Early returned to Nashville he found that much of his army had also retreated however he did not burn any mills so he renamed Millington again for him instead of burning them again like earlier. At first people in Millington thought that General Early was just being polite because he liked old Dutch names but eventually realized that he actually meant something more than this friendly gesture. After years of growth and development, Millington reached its peak during World War II with an increase in manufacturing jobs due to wartime demand for munitions manufacturers such as Ford Motor Company (then part of Henry Ford) and Bethlehem Steel Corporation (now Siemens). However, following the end of World War II there was a decrease in factory jobs throughout Davidson County which caused many people in Millington to lose out on economic opportunities. Since then there has been a gradual decline in population until reaching 1,569 residents at the current time
