Millington is a town in Giles County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Millington was founded in 1859 by John C. Mills and his family as a small agricultural village on the Cumberland River. The mills were built around 1875 and were destroyed by fire in 1908. Millson became an incorporated municipality in 1959 and has since grown to be one of the most diverse communities in Giles County with over 100 different businesses and more than half a million residents who are involved in various forms of economic activity including retail, manufacturing, transportation, information technology, professional services and research institutions. Millington is a small town located in Williamson County, Tennessee. The town was founded in 1824 by Andrew Milligan and his wife, Susannah. The Milligan family owned the land that now makes up the town. In 1827, the miller John Brown opened a gristmill on the creek that flows through Millington. The mill continued to operate until it was destroyed in 1865 by fire. The town of Millington grew around the mill complex. Many of the residents of Millington were born or raised in the milling community east of town. After the mill closed, many of these residents took up agriculture or started their own businesses in their local communities. Today, many people living in Millington are descendants of those who worked at the mill over time. The first store and post office in Millington opened on December 12, 1828. The store was called “Milligan’s Store” and served as a stop on stagecoaches traveling between Nashville and Knoxville[1]. The first schoolhouse was built northeast of present day Millington on what is now Main Street in 1833[2]. In 1840, Revivals began to take hold throughout Williamson County and many new churches were built.[3] On July 1, 1845, two women named Anna Shelby and Sallie Bigham purchased 640 acres northwest of present day Milington from Andrew Milligan for $10 per acre[4]. This purchase marked what would be known as “the acquisition period” for Milledonians as they began to settle their land into villages form various neighborhoods with schools and churches situated within walking distance of each other[5]. In 1830-31 there was only one road leading into or out of Williamson County from what is now Memphis[6], so transportation for people living outside Williamson County was difficult if not impossible. One solution that came about during this time period was horse drawn wagons which transported goods along main roads inside Williamson County but also carried passengers when necessary between different settlements within Williamson County[7]. In addition to being an obstacle to transportation for people living outside Williamson County, this system also made it difficult for farmers to sell productsoutside their home village since they had to bring all their produce into neighboring towns before selling it back outata door(s). As such, some entrepreneurs started small businesses within their home villages instead including blacksmith shops,[8] grocery stores,[9] dancing halls,[10], beauty salons,[11] etcetera which allowed villagers to trade with surrounding settlements while still remaining close to their homes [12]. By 1860 there were three churches located within walking distance each other[13], making it easy for villagers to get services outside of their home village without havingto go far away either! A major development that occurred during THIS TIME Period was Andrew Milligan's decisionto start tapping groundwater beneath his property north of present day Milledoniof finding oil under ground storage tanks throughout his area - this resultedinmillionsof dollars being broughtinandinvestedintoTennesseeoilfieldsduringthistimeperiod.[14][15][16][17] In 1861-62 tensions began building due To increasing Union activity across America particularly around cotton production - this ledtoAndrewMilligans decisionsnottoexportproduced CottonfromTennesseeuntil1865aftermuch protest from locals who felt he had been wrongedbyUnion policymakers[18][19][20] During Reconstruction following Reconstruction efforts failed miserably due largely because Confederate forces continuetobuildupandffromTennesseedespitestrikesandoccupationofthestateby Union troops beginning late 1870s - these eventsled tounumberof Tennesseansmovingoutofthe stateontothe eastern seaboard resultinginMilledonthetuningfortoeconstruct anewmbolicallyallegedlyinturnedcenturyagofollowingReconstruction efforts .
