By 1830, there were six businesses operating in Millington - three mills, one wagon factory, and two tanneries - all founded by white entrepreneurs who sawmill construction taking off as demand for textiles increased during thebells' American Industrial Revolution fueled by new technology like cotton ginning machines and steamships shipping refined materials across oceans. Mills became an important engine behind Knox County's growth during the 19th century both due to their importance as sources of income for farmers and their ability to provide employment for thousands of people throughout the county thanks to their production of Textile Workers Union Local No. 1 (TWU1) members being able to negotiate better wages than other industries within those same sectors given access to land valuable enough for farming but not yet accessible through purchase or donation by individuals or corporations led by millionaires such as Andrew Carnegie (1863-1937).
