Millington is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee located on the Cumberland River. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Millington is one of the oldest villages in Williamson County and has been active in local government since its incorporation in 1819. The village was founded by James Milligan, a Presbyterian minister who migrated to Williamson County from New York City in 1819. In 1826, Dr. John Capps purchased land near present-day Millington and began buying slaves to help cultivate his farmstead. The first school was built in 1830 and soon after, mills were established around the area to blast clay for use as building blocks and road material. By 1840, over 60 businesses had opened up along the Cumberland River, including 11 fabricating mills; three of these remain extant today: United States Clay Company (USCl), Humble Furniture Manufacturing Company (HFM) and Armour & Coats Factory (ACF). In 1877, Millington became part of the newly formed Williamson County when it was separated from Knox County. It remained an agricultural center until World War II when industry took over; during that time many of the original mill buildings were destroyed or used for housing developments such as Friendship Towers..Millington underwent a renaissance during the late 1990s with new development taking place along both its commercial corridors and its namesake street - James Milligan Boulevard - which now connects downtown with several miles of shopping districts ringing the riverfront community. Millington is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 199 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Millington was platted on January 1, 1859, and named after John S. Milligan, an early settler in the area. Millington has been populated by people of European descent since its founding. The first white settlers arrived in 1827 and built a log cabin near what is now the intersection of Old Hwy 321 and Old Hwy 522. The millrace that ran through Millington served as a water source for early farmers and their livestock until it was diverted into nearby Tellico Lake in the 1830s. In 1857, John Cockerill laid out a townsite on land he had bought from James Robertson for $8 per acre (equal to ). That year saw the first production at the new mill; cotton ginners produced up to 20tons/day using four chutes with each lift taking about two hours to operate. By 1860, there were ten cotton gins operating in Millington employing 175 workers total – many of whom were women who hired out as seamstresses or weavers during low-demand periods or when no other job offered itself because of prohibitionism within America at this time. A school board election held on November 3rd resulted in one member being elected to fill the unexpired term of another who had resigned due to illness: Willis McNaught (D). Mr McNaught immediately began work erecting a schoolhouse which opened for instruction on December 8th with forty-four students from twelve families including Millington’s own Mrs Fenton providing teaching materials including large print books from England imported via shipwrecked sailors such as Captain Cook’s " Endeavour" Expedition whose remains still lie off shore some twenty miles east of our town today along State Route 22 just south of Indianola Creek where they washed ashore following their ill-fated return voyage in 1770 while stranded off Spanish Florida
