Rifle type shootings continued to grow in popularity until 1836 when General Samuel Colt introduced his revolver into society. By the end of the 19th century there were over 100 different types of handguns available on the market alone! Gun violence had become an all-too-common problem throughout much of North America, southern Canada, parts of Western Europe, and parts of Asia Pacific; however, until recently little progress was being made towards preventing handgun homicides from occurring simply because so few people knew about or practiced safe handling practices for handguns (Kessler et al., 2002). As early as 1911 two gunmen opened fire on citizens attending aardvark hunting safaris near Tucson Arizona killing six people including three police officers; this event remains one of history’s deadliest mass shootings (Morrow & Heston 1993). In 1968 then President Lyndon B Johnson signed Executive Order 13725 which directed agencies within federal government that possessed certain arms “to take all necessary measures within their power under law to prevent any person who has acquired any automatic weapon from beingunlawfully able to possess or use that weapon” (Ullah 1990). Unfortunately these executive orders did not achieve their intended purpose as many gun owners obtained automatic weapons through legal loopholes or tradeadesigns permits which gave them immunity from punishment (Lambert 1995). It wasn't until 1994 when Congress passed The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act following nationwide shootings at Columbine High School that action finally started towards curtailing handgun homicide rates across America (Giovanni & DePauw 1996). By 2000 there had been declines against average annual murders by 2% while handgun homicide rates decreased by almost 20%. However despite these encouraging trends gun violence still remained an issue across America with more people killed by gunfire every year than died by car accidents combined
