Smith, who started out making pistols and shotguns. By the 1870s, Smith had opened a shop that became one of the most important gunsmiths in the area. In 1882, he founded what is now known as Armoury Firearms Company. This company manufactured rifles, pistols and shotguns for use by farmers and other outdoor enthusiasts. Gunmakers at Armoury also produced ammunition for these weapons. The company continued to exist until it closed its doors in 1932. In 1893, miners from nearby Kingston created a sawmill on the town's riverbank. This new industry brought new life to Millington and made it an important node in Chattanooga's gunslinging community. Millington is located on the banks of the Clinch River and has a post office with ZIP code 73921. The first recorded mention of Millington was in 1792 when it was spelled "Milnton". It may have been named after Colonel John Milner who settled in what is now Hardin County in 1772. In 1823, millstone production became an important industry in the county and by 1828 there were twelve mills operating in Hardin County. The area around Millington soon became known as the "Rolling Mills District". In 1859, part of Hardin County went to Texas during the American Civil War and much of what is now Millington was lost to development. Over time, other businesses came and went but many still remain today including two breweries (Plymouth Brewing Company and First Tennessee Brewery), three grocery stores (Jenny's Market Place, Old Mill Stop & Grocery Co., Golden Corral), four restaurants (Chili's Mexican restaurant, Max's Hamburgers steak house & sandwich shop, Table Top Tavern), two health clinics (St Joseph Health Centers - Southeast Nashville) and one postal service facility serving both ruralHardinCounty residents as well as Memphis commuters from nearby towns such as Germantown and overlay counties such as Johnson City.
