Millington was founded in 1827 by John Milling and his family. The first store in the town was built on Myrick Creek and operated by Melling until 1839 when he sold it to James Kidd. In 1840, Wm. Hays opened a store and post office in what is now the old school building on Main Street. The first church in town was erected in 1842 by Revs. Jno. Burtis and Geo Pritchett with assistance from John Milling who donated land for the foundation of the present Methodist Episcopal Church Building on Cemetery Road which replaced an earlier log cabinchurch that had been lost during a fire in 1837 which destroyed many homes around town.. The first school in Millington was organized on December 6, 1846 by Mr. Ladd and Mrs Cushman under instruction from Reverend Pritchett who also served as its first teacher with Drs Whitehead and Kirkpatrick as trustees.. In 1865, Millington became one of twelve townships within Williamson County created through an act of the General Assembly creating road districts; this change resulted from increased agricultural production typical of southern Williamson County at that time due to new irrigation systems being installed nearby including those near Cosby (now Tellico Dam). Millington would remain within its own township until 1889 when it became part of Knoxville Township.; however some residents still refer to themselves as “MillINGTONites” even though they live outside of Knoxville In 1907 milling began again along Myrick Creek with a new combine operated by Abram Smith .. By 1921 there were three mills operating total with more than 350 employees but production decreased over time because World War I interrupted demand for flour while other industries developed In 1950 closed down local plant & all operations ceased except marketing . Today milling resumed along Myrick Creek using mostly older equipment with most employees working at neighboring companies

The town was named for Captains John and Ezekiel Mills, both of whom were major league baseball players in earlier days. Millington experienced its first industrial revolution when the Union Pacific Railroad came through in 1869 and built a line out of Memphis to Nashville. By 1907, Millington had become an important center for cotton production because it had access to riverboats which transported raw cotton across the river to be processed into clothing or other products. The town also became known for its hot-air balloons which flew over downtown during summertime). The decline of cotton production during World War II led to a significant decrease in population and jobs in Millington; however, it has since recovered and regained some prominence as a suburb of Memphis. Today, Millington is home to many small businesses and families who continue to make their local presence known by enjoying its relaxed lifestyle, great culture,and wide variety of recreational activities (including fishing, golfing, hiking/climbing), including three nature preserves that provide habitat for more than 100 species of animals: Hickory Creek Preserve (home to 12 different types of deer), Laurel Ridge Preserve (home to more than 140 types of birds), and Panther Hollow Preserve (containing several miles of streams with trout swimming among them).
