Millington is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Millington is located on the Cumberland Plateau and bordered by Hillsboro to the east and west, Lebanon to the north and south, and Prestonsburg to the southeast. The first settlers in what is now Millington were British soldiers who arrived in 1796 during General James Robertson's expedition against hostile Cherokee Indians. They named their land "Millsborough," after an estate they had seen near Edinburgh, Scotland. The first post office was established in 1804, and mail was delivered from Lebanon to Millington until 1836 when it was moved to Prestonsburg. In 1819, John Ritchie opened a gristmill here which became one of the most successful flour mills in Tennessee. In 1865, he sold his interest in the mill to Jno Hinkle who operated it for over fifty years until his death in 1951. During that time period, Millington saw some significant growth with many new businesses being established including a grocery store (1892), a bank (1901), two churches (1912 & 1926), three schools (1910-1920), a firehouse (1927), as well as several residences including one built by Jno Hinkle himself (). During World War II much of what is now Millington were residential areas used for military purposes such as airfields or training camps; however most residents relocated before hostilities began on September 2nd., 1939 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor(). Many homes were destroyed or converted into barracks while others escaped devastation but later returned home through Operation Overlord which ended on April 9th., 1945 just days before Japan's surrender). A few notable buildings that remain from earlier times include: Ritchie's Mill Store which still stands next door today; Griswold House which served as both homecoming center for local high school students upon graduation from college during WWII; Pritchard House which housed both primary/elementary schools for generations before its demolition c1970s; Witherspoon Store A gift shop/bakery opened adjacent to Ritchie's Mill Store back then also remains open today albeit without any occupied retail space currently
Millington was founded in 1810 by Cyrus Milligan and his wife, Jane. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, and in 1868 it became a county seat. milling continued until 1966 when the last mill closed down. Today, there are few remaining remnants of early milling life in Millington, as most mills have either gone out of business or been replaced by more automated processes.
