Millington is located in Johnson County, Tennessee, just east of the city of Memphis. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was first settled by Europeans in 1819 as a small farming village called Millsborough. Millington was platted in 1836 and named for John Millington, an Englishman who had come to America to purchase land in what is now Johnson County. The original mill on the site Failor Creek became operational in 1840 and continued to be used until it burned down in 1886. A new mill was built on the same site and began production in 1889. The milling industry closed around 1990 but its legacy remains with Millington: a small town with a rich history that has been home to many famous people, including singer Willie Dixon and basketball player Julius Erving.

The name of the town comes from a mill on the Cumberland River that was first built by James Millington in 1811. The first white person to reside in what is now Millsboro Township was John Sevier, who platted the township in 1798. In 1811, James Millington founded the first permanent settler's home in what is today Millsboro Township with three acres (1 hectare). Millington became one of the original twelve townships formed within Hunter County on February 14, 1821 when it joining with other townships including Franklin to form Knoxville Township. It remained an unincorporated community until 1850 when it became part of the new city of Knoxville. On July 1, 1870, part of Millington replaced Knoxville as the county seat for Hunter County when that county was created from parts of Defiance and Pulaski counties.. Millsboro has had its share of revenue highs and lows over its history. Despite experiencing some economic declines during World War II due to increased competition from other businesses withinKnoxville, Millsboro saw a resurgence beginning in the early 1960s as residents turned to small-town living rather than larger metropolitan areas because they could find more support services available close by (including libraries). However, during this time period too much growth led to social problems such as vandalism and prostitution which clogged up local streetsides; continuing issues led to Millington's incorporation into Knoxville proper only two years later effective January 3rd 1966 despite protestations by residents who felt their rights were being diluted by merger proceedings. Millsboro experienced another revival following 9/11th when many peopleLocally chose to rebuild using materials scavenged from New York City rubble since there were no similar programs or resources available closerby . Since then things have slowly deteriorated again with crime rates increasing Overall although still below pre-9/11 levels
