Millington is home to the Millington community college and the mill that produces flour for local restaurants and markets. The town also contains a post office and a few shops. The name of the town comes from: "Mallingertown" which was given to it by General John Mallinder in 1796. The first settlers in what would become Millington were farmers who arrived around 1800. By 1820, there were four families living in Millington. By 1825, there were ten families living in Millington. In 1830, the first store opened in Millington and by 1840, there were five stores operating in the town. Over time, retail businesses became more common and by 1860, there were twelve stores operating in Millington. By 1870, many of the original farms had been abandoned and land was being leased out for farming purposes or used as an agricultural market place for surrounding counties including Williamson County. The population of Millington had reached 2,500 by 1880 but declined over the next several decades due to various factors such as increased travel within Williamson County or changes within the regional economy which affected other towns within Williamson County Similarly to most other villages throughout America during this time period consolidation began to take place with larger communities seeking greater economies of scale while smaller villages continued to exist unassisted.. In 1910, when World War I ended with Germany's defeat (the war resulted in millions lost jobs across America), much of SouthernTennessee experienced a rapid growth as people returned home Following World War II (1948-1949), however demand for goods produced outside of Tennessee increased significantly resulting in a decline within various industries including manufacturing This led to job losses among those effected through closed industry However not all residents left their homes; many chose instead to purchase property elsewhere within Williamson County where they could continue farming or sell their homes back into circulation Some residents did leave after years of struggling but others chose not to exodus because they felt that quality life opportunities awaited them Within twenty years following World War II almost one-third of all nonresidential properties owneried by Williamson county natives had changed hands Multiple reasons include new subdivisions established along highway routes leading northward into central Nashville or southward into Chattanooga
